Bio

Alain Girard has a background in the sociology of food and is specialized in qualitative methods. He is currently working on a socio-economic portrait of the forest mushroom industry in Québec and a mapping of its actors. 

He is also conducting research on social innovation initiatives that promote the purchase of local products for institutional food services. This study involves working with many stakeholders, documenting their realities, but also collaborating with them on institutional changes in the procurement process. 

Finally, he is interested in the value chains of products from Québec’s terroirs and the leadership of their actors: producers, processors, distributors and territorial officials who act in support of marketing.

Current research projects:

• Développement d’une application Web destinée aux services alimentaires institutionnels permettant de produire des analyses des achats, notamment des produits québécois
• Portrait socioéconomique du secteur des champignons forestiers au Québec
• Innovation collaborative en restauration : vers une offre de produits alimentaires locaux attractive, différenciée et profitable
• Développement de systèmes alimentaires locaux qui soutiennent la production et la transformation des aliments par, pour et avec les communautés autochtones grâce à la recherche collaborative (avec la communauté autochtone de Waswanipi)
• Encadrement du développement de prototypes de plats pour favoriser le plaisir de manger en fin de vie (soins palliatifs) avec des personnes étudiantes en gestion de la restauration
