Overview

This program is designed to train responsible, creative, and committed restaurant managers who are able to adapt to changing market realities and to provide a unique customer experience, regardless of the type of environment in which they may choose to work.

Program structure and courses

Duration and schedule

  • Program starting in the fall  
  • Spread over 3 years on a full-time basis (6 course sessions and 2 summer internships)  
  • Includes a total of 3 490 hours, including 2 520 hours of coursework and 970 hours of compulsory internships   
  • Daytime classes 
  • Educational outings and practical applications taking place according to variable schedules (day or evening)  

  • Schedule, dates and course order are subject to change.
  • The ITHQ reserves the right to cancel a course or program if there are insufficient registrations to justify its offering. In such cases, program and registration fees will be refunded in full.

Hand-on experience

Compulsory internships

  • Year 1: 3-month (350 h) paid summer internship in the kitchen  
  • Year 2: 3-month (350 h) paid summer internship in front-of-house service
  • Year 3: unpaid end-of-studies internship in restaurant supervision. Lasting 15 weeks (270 h), this internship takes place during the last course session, 2.5 days a week. 

Practical applications 

  • Throughout the training course: practical applications in cooking, service, sommellerie, bar service, etc. 
  • These applications will take place in a variety of environments, including ITHQ teaching restaurants, cafeterias, food services and community organizations. 

Internships that match your profile

  • Depending on your interests and career path, your internships can take place in a variety of work environments: independent or chain restaurants, cafeterias, institutional or corporate food services, community organizations, etc.   
  • Students who already work in the food service industry can carry out their summer internships in their workplace if it meets the internship requirements. 

Diploma

  • Diploma of Collegial Studies (DCS) in Gestion de d’un établissement de restauration from the Ministère de l’Enseignement supérieur
  • ITHQ Signature certificate in Gestion d’un établissement de restauration

Certifications

  • Hygiene and food safety for food handler and manager (MAPAQ) 
  • Food allergy management (Allergies Québec) 
  • Service in Action (Éduc’alcool) 
  • Service-Complice (Kéroul) 
  • First aid 

All students are required to follow certain basic rules regarding professional image.

Articulation agreement

If you have a DCS from the ITHQ, you can access the Applied Bachelor in Hospitality and Hotel Management or the Baccalauréat en gestion du tourisme et de l’hôtellerie ITHQ-ESG UQAM and get your university degree in 2 years instead of 3

To benefit from this agreement, you must have a minimum R-score cut-off of 26 and meet all program admission requirements.

Admission requirements

To be eligible for this program, you must:

  • Have a Secondary School Diploma (DES) or equivalent education, OR
  • Have a Diploma of Vocational Studies (DVS) and successfully completed the Secondary 5 language of instruction courses, the Secondary 5 second language and Secondary 4 mathematics courses (Culture, société et technique CST 4e – 063404 or equivalent).
  • Demonstrate proficiency in oral and written French.

The ITHQ may invite you to a selection interview that will take place in-person or remotely, according to your place of residence.
